Regeneration of John Barker Place

Regeneration of John Barker Place

We’re planning an exciting redevelopment of John Barker Place on the Westmill estate in Hitchin.

It will include new homes, shops and a new play area. The first 2 phases will include new homes for residents in Freemans Close and the nearby Westmill Lawns retirement complex, enabling them to continue living safely and comfortably in the area they’re familiar with.

Progress so far

The main planning application was submitted following a public exhibition on 10 April 2019 and discussion with residents and the owners of the businesses affected.

We have also submitted a planning application for a new children's play area which we are proposing is on the edge of Swinburne playing fields.

Anita Khan, executive director of customer services at settle said "We know that the redevelopment of John Barker Place has been long awaited by residents. We're pleased to be progressing this investment in the Westmill estate as quickly as possible.”

Public meeting

We have arranged an additional public meeting to discuss these plans on Monday 21 October from 7-9pm at Priory School, Hitchin.
