Government winter energy support schemes

As colder months approach the government has shared details of its Winter Energy Support Schemes for 2025–2026, aimed at helping older people and low-income households manage heating bills.
Winter Fuel Payment (WFP)
Older residents born on or before 21 September 1959 may receive a tax-free annual payment of between £100 and £300, depending on their age and circumstances. The payment is made automatically into your bank account if you receive the State Pension or certain benefits, usually in November or December.
Please note that households with an income above £35,000 may see HMRC reclaim part or all of the payment.
Cold Weather Payment (CWP)
Those on income-related benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, or Universal Credit may qualify for £25 for each 7-day period of very cold weather (0°C or below) from 1 November and 31 March. Payments are triggered automatically into your bank account based on local weather data, with no need to apply.
Warm Home Discount (WHD)
Low-income households could benefit from a £150 one-off discount to help with winter energy costs. The discount is applied directly to the electricity or gas account between October and March
This applies automatically to eligible pensioners and people on certain benefits, including those receiving Universal Credit or Housing Benefit.
Residents are urged to check the official Government website for the latest eligibility details and updates on these schemes.
