Work to begin on John Barker Place redevelopment

We’re delighted to be delivering on our promise of the regeneration of John Barker Place on the Westmill estate.

The first two phases of the £20 million regeneration plans will see 83 new affordable homes and two shops built by settle, with development work starting on the existing play area at the corner of John Barker Place and Mattocke Road.

This follows the opening of the new play area provided by settle at Swinburne playing fields last summer, and the Westmill Community Centre which was built by settle in 2016.

settle chief executive, Gavin Cansfield, said: “I am delighted to see work on the redevelopment of John Barker Place starting in January. Investing in our local neighbourhoods and working with communities is a priority for us at settle. We will continue working closely with residents as the development progresses to understand the ways we can best invest in the Westmill community through the regeneration scheme.”

Timeline for planned works

Jarvis Contracting Ltd have been appointed as the main contractor by settle to deliver the first two phases of this regeneration project. The first two phases of the regeneration of John Barker Place will include new homes for residents in Freemans Close and the nearby Westmill Lawns retirement complex to enable them to continue living safely and comfortably in the area they’re familiar with.

Phase 1 of the project will see new homes and shops built on the site of the old play area at John Barker Place, which is scheduled to be completed by Summer 2022.

The second phase will see new residences provided at the current block of flats and shops beside the play area, which are expected to be available by Autumn 2023.

settle have also received outline planning permission for additional homes in a third phase of the development and will to share more information around these proposals in 2021.
