Tom’s story

“I knew I wanted to train as an apprentice when I was in my last year at school - university wasn’t for me. I had completed a week’s work experience with an electrician in year 10 and knew an electrical apprenticeship was the right fit for me."

Tom, Electrical Qualified Supervisor at settle

Training

I started at North Herts Homes, now settle in August 2011, after I finished school. My apprenticeship took four years to complete. For three years I attended college on a Monday and went out every day with an electrician for the rest of the week to learn the trade.  I received an NVQ level 3 qualification and City and Guilds Inspection and Testing qualifications.

I found everyone welcoming and supportive. The training I received gave me the time to learn my skills in an environment where I could take a bit more time.  I also got the opportunity to get to know all the other trades.

Development

I have been at settle now for ten years and work in the office where my role is to oversee the contractors we hire to carry out the support our electrical repairs on properties.

Throughout my time at settle, I’ve been supported to continue my training and keep updated on electrical regulations and had the opportunity to increase my qualifications.

An apprenticeship was 100% the right move for me. A university setting is not for everyone. By completing an apprenticeship – I think you mature quickly, you learn common sense and good life skills - it really helped to build my confidence. You can also earn while you learn - I even managed to buy my first home a few years ago.”
