Asbestos

Asbestos

If you think something you’re about to work on contains asbestos or you find damaged asbestos at your property, please contact us immediately.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos was widely used in buildings up until 1999. It is a naturally occurring fibre that’s fire resistant and provides good insulation.

The Health & Safety Executive has confirmed that asbestos is not dangerous if it’s left alone and not damaged.

Where you might find it

  • On the parts of the roof that gutters are attached to (fascias and soffits)
  • In electrical cupboards
  • For floor and ceiling tiles
  • In small quantities in toilet cisterns, bath panels and textured coatings

This is not a complete list.

We maintain an asbestos register that records where asbestos has been found in our properties. This information is available on request.

When is it dangerous?

Asbestos can be dangerous when the fibres are released (like sawdust) and this usually occurs when it is disturbed by:

  • Drilling
  • Sanding
  • Sawing
  • Being removed

If you find asbestos do not try to remove it yourself.

If the asbestos material is in good condition it’s often best left in place.

What we’ll do

As part of our promise to keep you safe if the asbestos is damaged, we’ll have it removed by a specialist contractor. If you rent your home from us this will be carried out free of charge.
